Private Apartment

A private apartment lit almost entirely from concealed sources. Recessed fittings are kept off the walls and away from the centre of rooms, so the parquet, the joinery and the stone detailing carry the light rather than the ceiling.

Light on the surfaces, not the ceiling

The plan follows the materials. Warm light grazes the patterned parquet in the entrance hall, washes the panelled joinery and picks up the mirror frame, which leaves the ceiling plane almost unlit. The apartment reads as a set of surfaces rather than a sequence of lit rooms.

One decorative move per room

Beyond the architectural layer each room gets a single decorative piece and no more, the flower-form wall lights in the bedroom, a pendant over the table, a reader beside the sofa. Keeping the count down is what stops a home of this size looking like a showroom.
